As all of Boston now knows, a 40 foot chunk of concrete fell from the ceiling of the Williams Tunnel two nights ago, killing a Jamaica Plain woman and leaving her new husband with only minor injuries. In a press conference yesterday, Governor Romney called for the removal of the overseer in charge of the Big Dig. In what I hope other people recognize as a supreme error in judgement, the good Mitt compared the incident–though adding “on a smaller scale”–to the circumstances surrounding Hurricane Katrina. He even compared the overseer–apparently, in other contexts, a good friend; I believe he used the phrase “I’ve been to his family home”–to the former FEMA head, our buddy Brown. I’m going to assume that the overseer isn’t quite as much of an idiot as Brown. At least we can’t hope for the kind of email gems that surfaced from Brown’s desk.
Clearly the Big Dig has been pretty supremely mismanaged from the start, but I wonder if Romney’s plan to get a “professional” will be that much better.
